San Beda
College continues to renovate its facilities
to meet the students' needs and remain
at par with other schools and international
standard.
Under
the guidance of Fr. Anscar J. Chupungco,
Rector-President, Rev. Alberic P. Lazerna,
OSB, coordinator of Physical Plant Services,
implemented the facelifting of the college's
various facilities.
After
renovating the façade, classrooms,
comfort rooms, hallways, offices and the
Dom Felipe café (named after a
longtime Kapampangan cook of the abbey)
Law students are now using the newly built
moot court. The moot court is an old room
that was given a new look so that fourth
year law students have a feel of working
in a courtroom. In addition the Conference
Hall was also spruce up and will be used
as venue for seminars, symposia and lectures
for the faculty and students.
A
Multimedia Center is now available, too.
It has state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities.
The biggest plan for the physical improvements
is the construction of a two-story building
within the campus that will house the
new Physical Plant Building. The administrators
decided that the old Physical Plant Building
is no longer fit to be used due to limited
space and debilitating quality. Shops
for the electrical, carpentry, printing,
supply office and a clinic will be housed
in the Physical Plant Building.
According
to the plan, the site of the old Physical
Plant Building will be used for a new
parking space.
The
St. Benedict Building (High School building)
is expected to have its new look and new
usage, too. It is planned to be the new
College of Medicine Building for the pre-clinical
years-first year and second year-in time
for the opening of the nursing program
next academic year.
Medicine
and nursing students on their clinical
years (third year and fourth year) will
use the campus in Shaw. |

The
newly built world-
class St. Placid Sports
Center where students,
staff and alumni can
enjoy state-of -the-art
amenities |

Athletes
from
different
sports
such as
basketball,
swimming,
football
and
track-and-field
will now be
under one roof.

The
perimeter fence is also being
repainted. Yearly, when summer
sets in, the fence is repainted
to maintain its pleasing look.
Summer is the best time to paint
according to Fr. Lazerna so that
students will appreciate the cleanliness
of the school as the next academic
year begins. Grade School classrooms
are also undergoing renovations.
There
are also plans to improve the
gardens within the college. The
St. Maur's, Jubilee and Sabater
gardens are set to undergo new
landscaping. The gardens will
give students a place to commune
with nature. It is also good venue
for relaxation and studying.
Fr.
Lazerna said the preservation
and upkeep of the facilities of
the campus is up to the students,
whom he commended for cooperating
and maintaining cleanliness and
not vandalizing the school's facilities.
Bedan students make maintenance
of these facilities easy. Once
a month, students are tasked to
undergo a clean-up drive. They
do menial jobs such as picking
up small trash and throwing them
in the garbage bins.
In
the Athletics Department, Fr.
Bede S. Hechonova, OSB, athletics
moderator, is very pleased to
announce the opening of a world-class
sports center. The new sports
center was named after St. Placid.
It formally opened this month.
It has two basketball courts with
wooden flooring. Haro Company
from Hamburg, Germany built the
wood parquet flooring. A Frenchman
made the basketball goals. The
sports center's construction began
in April 2002 and was completed
this month. It also has a trophy
museum that will showcase numerous
athletics awards earned by San
Beda College athletes. The center
can accommodate a thousand audience
per game with its very comfortable
bleachers.
Athletes
from different sports such as
basketball, swimming, football
and track-and-field will now be
under one roof. A three-story
building, which serves as Athletes
Quarters, is expected to be used
by these athletes as soon as power
supply lines are installed. The
said Athletes Quarter will house
64 occupants who are mostly from
the provinces. It has complete
facilities from beds to shower
rooms, comfort rooms, and study
halls.
Other physical plants improvements
planned for the next academic
year are the upgrading of the
football field and the renovation
of the swimming pool.
