SAN BEDA COLLEGE conducted a Special
Academic Convocation on February
19 in honor of a lady, two men of
the cloth, and a charitable institution. |

In
a ceremony held at the Abbey Church
of Our Lady of Montserrat, the Board
of Trustees, administrators and
faculty of San Beda College led
the celebrations honoring Dr. Lourdes
M. Quisumbing; Rev. Ruben M. Tanseco,
S.J.; Bro. Andrew B. Gonzales F.S.C.;
and Caritas Manila.
Dr.
Lourdes M. Quisumbing was conferred
and honorary doctorate degree (honoris
causa) in Humanities. Dr. Quisumbing,
a former secretary of the Department
of Education, Culture and Sports,
is known for her visionary leadership
in the improvement of the nation's
educational system. She is also
a former member of the UNESCO Executive
Board in Paris from 1991 to 1995
and secretary-general of the UNESCO
National Commission of the Philippines
from 1990 to 1998. Her remarkable
achievements as an educator earned
her numerous accolades. She is committed
to research to enhance new paradigms,
programs and practices in teacher
education, globalism, and values
education toward the culture of
peace.
The
Board of Trustees, the dean and
faculty of the College of Arts and
Sciences saw her Christian life
as an embodiment of the Benedictine
ideals or Pax and Ora et Labora
and the Bedan values of Fides, Scientia,
Et Virtus making her one of this
year's top honorees. |

| Rev.
Ruben M. Tanseco, S.J. was given
the Saint Benedict Award. Fr. Tanseco
is an expert on family relationships.
He was the president of the Center
for Family Ministries Foundation.
He also served as spiritual director
of the Marriage Encounter Foundation
of the Philippines and the Christian
Parenting for Peace and Justice
Foundation. He is also known for
his generous sharing of knowledge
and experience as a priest, professor,
counselor, author, columnist, speaker,
and lecturer on issues concerning
family matters, The Board of Trustees
chose him as this year's Saint Benedict
Award recipient for his Benedictine
ideal of peace, prayer, work, and
humility. |

| Bro.
Andrew B. Gonzales, F.S.C. was given
the Saint Bede Award. Like Dr. Quisumbing,
Bro. Gonzales was a secretary of
the education department. He is
a respectable educator, and a specialist
in liguistics. He initiated educational
development projects and assisted
in the level development of languages
in the nation. It was during his
watch that Basic Education Curriculum
was envisioned. He shared his knowledge
and expertise with different educational
institutions as professor, administrator,
consultant, member or chairman of
various boards of trustees. He wrote
1,500 researchers on linguistics,
education, and religious education.
The Board of Trustees saw him as
an epitome of the Benedictine ideals
of Pax and Ora et Labora. |

The
Caritas of Manila is this year's
Ora et Labora Award. Caritas is
a social services and development
ministry of the Archdiocese of
Manila. Its program and services
are directed toward total human
development of the marginalized
people and the promotion of social
justice in the light of the Catholic
Church's social teachings, Caritas
is known for its selfless and
dedicated service to the urban
poor women, abandoned and exploited
children, and prison inmates and
their families. It has social
welfare programs such as crisis
intervention, emergency relief,
outreach, and scholarship for
poor but deserving students. Truly
an inspiring exemplification of
the Benedictine ideal of Ora et
Labora. Msgr. Francisco G. Tantoco,
Jr., executive director of the
Caritas Manila, accepted the award.
