AWARDS
     Once again San Beda College brought honor and prestige to the country when it competed, and won, in the Busan Choir Olympics last October 19, 2002.
     In the prestigious international singing competition, the San Beda College Chorale won for the Philippines the coveted first prize in the Young Male category. In November 29, 2002, the same group won the National Championship during the National Competitions for Young Artist (NAMCYA) held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
     On the same day, the San Beda College Chorale held the BOSESAN 2002 Choir Festival at the College grounds. The event aimed to gather choristers from different universities and colleges in the metropolis. Needless to say, the choir festival, which was participated in by choirs from different colleges and universities, was a resounding success.
Carl Uvas, a third year Marketing student, was chosen to represent the school in the 5th National Ayala Young Leaders Congress last February 4-7, 2003, where students from different colleges and universities nationwide participated in a competitive search for the country's best students. The congress airmed to instill among its participants a sound sense of leadership skill, thus contributing to the renewal of the nation.
NEW COURSES
     The Department of Social Sciences announces the inclusion of BS in Psychology to its roster of balanced and holistic curriculum in the field of liberal arts and basic education. The various academic and special programs of the department aim to produce graduates of the New Bedan Age who will be assured of a well-balanced program toward professional competence and meaningful practice of the profession; an eclectic and integrated approach toward a preparatory course and/or a terminal degree program; a multi-diverse and competitive career and employment opportunities; and a responsive Christian and service-oriented servant leadership as its core mission contributing to society's progress and transformation.
ACTIVITIES
     The office of the Prefect of Student Affairs held last February 22, 2003 the search for the Ten Outstanding Students of San Beda College of Arts and Sciences (TOSSBA). This annual search is aimed at recognizing students in the CAS who epitomize and exemplify the Bedan qualities of academic excellence and exceptional leadership. Likewise, it sponsored the annual Organizational Selection Board (OSEB) last March 10-12, 2003. The said board deliberated on the performance of this year's student organizations, and coordinated all the student organizations of the CAS.
     The annual Marketing Summit was held last December 7, 2002 at the Garden Ballroom of the EDSA- Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City. The San Beda Marketing Management Association sponsored the activity which carried the theme, "Forefront: Paving Way for Future Corporate Marketing Professionals." The summit served as the perfect vehicle for students to learn new marketing practitioners and academicians were invited to speak at the affair.
     Meanwhile, the Bedan Societal Marketing Week was held last February 16-22, 2003 at the college grounds, organizing various activities including seminars, symposia, exhibits, a fashion show and even a pet show for the annual celebration.
     In addition, several lucky students from the Marketing Department went to Singapore last February 20-23, 2003 for an international exposure trip. The program oriented the students to prevailing practices of international trade/marketing in Singapore. Students from De La Salle University, St. Scholastica's College and the University of Santo Tomas joined the 55-strong group led by San Beda College. Part of the itinerary was a visit to the Marketing Institute of Singapore.
     Students of the Department of Philosophy and Human Resource Development celebrated their annual HR Summit with the theme, "Reengineering the Human Dimension Toward Global Competitiveness" at the Dusit Hotel Nikko, Makati City last December 16, 2002. Keynote speaker was Vice President Teofisto Guingona. Other HR practitioners were invited as resource speakers during the affair. Prior to the summit, the department held a one-week activity at the MMLDC at Antipolo City.
The San Beda Chorale wins accolades in Busan, South Korea
     Selected students of the Economics Department participated in the 3rd National Conference of the Philippine Council of Economics Students at the Holy Cross College of Davao last November 27-29, 2002. The theme of the gathering was "Economics Education for Agricultural Modernization and Environmental Sustainability in Liberalized Global Setting."
     Economics students sponsored a summit at the Dusit Hotel Nikko last February 6, 2003. The theme of the summit was "Reinventing the Structures of the Domestic Economy through Effective and Competent National Governance." The conference was co-sponsored by the Letran Economics Society. Guest speakers for the occasion were Senators Manuel Villar and Edgardo Angara.
     The Department of Business Management and Entrepreneurship held its Annual Management Week last February 3-7, 2003. Among activities scheduled for the week included the First Management Decathlon, the Management Forum at the Manila Hotel with Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon as keynote speaker, and scheduled tours in Rizal, Pampanga, and Nueva Ecija.
     Students belonging to homeroom class 2-ABE sponsored a Management In-House Seminar last March 4, 2003 at the Abbot Lopez Hall of San Beda College. Special guest of honor was Senator Franklin Drilon.
Selected students of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship underwent community involvement activities at the Samata Village, Las Piñas City last December 15, 2002.
     The Department of Computer Applications and Information Science topped the over-all championship during the recently concluded Sportsfest of the College of Arts and Sciences. Sporting competitions in basketball, volleyball, football and swimming were held through the auspices of the Student Council.
     The annual Information and Communications Technology Conference was held last February 7-9, 2003 at the Concorde Hotel in Baguio City. Students of the Department of Computer Applications and Information Science participated in an IT Conference. A campus network visit was held at the St. Louis University in Baguio City where administrators and students of the SLU warmly welcomed the Bedan delegation.
A Christmas get-together was sponsored by the students belonging to the Department of Accountancy, Financial and Legal Management held last December 18, 2002 at Enchanted Kingdom. The activity was held to bring the students together in a fun and informal atmosphere to relax and enjoy one another's company. A Christmas dinner capped the traditional Christmas festivities of the department that was held at the Sangkalan Bar and Grill last December 19.
     In celebration of the Feast of the Sto. Niño and Frolics 2003, the Department of Human Kinetics Development conducted a Cultural Dance Show featuring various Ati-Atihan presentations in a rare and colorful display of faith and culture.
Freshmen and sophomore PE students joined the Healthy Lifestyle Campaign sponsored by the Department of Health at the Quirino Grandstand las February 16, 2003. The active participation of the Bedan students, who joined students from other colleges and universities, made the even successful.
     Last March 8 and 9, 2003, the Human Kinetics Department conducted the Annual Ballroom Dancing at the College Quadrangle of San Beda College. Students taking up PE02 participated in this activity, being paired with students from the College of the Holy Spirit, La Consolation College, and the Centro Escolar University. This formal event showcased Bedans dancing to different steps, choreographed and executed with grace.
Dulaang Bedista, the resident theater group of the CAS, staged the zarzuela, Walang Sugat! At the Abbot Lopez Hall.
     Freshmen students taking up HRSOP underwent with students of St. Paul College of Quezon City last February 29 and March 2, 2003. The theme of the program was, "The Role of Sexuality in Human Interrelationship."
FACULTY and ADMINISTRATORS
Prof. Feorillo Petronilo Demeterio III of the Department of Philosophy and Human Resource Development delivered a paper on post-modern philosophy before the students of the De La Salle University last Febraury 22, 2003 at the Don Enrique Yuchengco Building of DLSU. The topic of his paper was, "Grafting Post-Modernism in Pre-Modern Soil."
Atty. Roberto Goan of the Department of Philosophy and Human Resource Development successfully passed the last Bar Examinations. He graduated from the same department and pursued his law studies at the Ateneo de Manila.
The faculty members of the Department of Languages and Literature held team-building activity last January 17-18, 2003 at Lipa City, Batangas.
The faculty members of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences recorded the following achievements:
Mrs. Fedeliz Tuy was elected chairman of the secretariat for the National Convention of Chemistry Teachers held at Miriam College last Febuary 21-22, 2003.
Dr. Imelda Santiago of the Department of Social Sciences spearheaded a series of lectures dubbed, "Patakaran: A People's Policy Lecture Series" at the Abbot Lopez Hall last November 26-29, 2002. These lectures were conducted through Fundacion Santiago and the Presidential Management Staff. Among the speakers of the lectures include: PMS Undersecretary Nonoy Catura, on "Addressing the Root Causes of Insurgency"; Interior and Local Government Secretary Joey Lina, on "Addressing the Jueteng Problem," NAMPREL Executive Director Mr. Telebert Laoc, "A Cost-Efficient Electoral Modernization Program," and Atty. Chito Gaston, on "A Road Map to Charter Change."
Dr. Cecilia Reguerra, chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, delivered a lecture on the Research Forum on the Mendiola Consortium schools last January 13, 2003 at La Consolacion College.
Dr. Tita Evasco-Branzuela, Vice Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, delivered a talk on "Improving Productivity in the Workplace" at the National Institute of Biotechnology at the University of the Philippines-Los Baños. Faculty members and staff of the UPLB attended the seminar.
