San Beda College regained the seniors crown in the 85th NCAA taekwondo championships, dethroning College of St. Benilde recently at The Arena in San Juan.
The Red Lions amassed a total of 394.08 points to claim their third men’s taekwondo title in the league since the event was introduced in 1998. They previously won in 2006 and 2008.
Dexter Cabradilla, a prized find from Pines City National High School in Baguio City, led the Red Lions to the victory and was later named the tournament’s MVP.
"Siyempre masarap ang feeling na nag-champion kami ulit. Mahirap ang kompestiyon kasi mabigat ang CSB at San Sebastian, nagkatalo lang sa mga huling events," said San Beda mentor Noel Veneracion, who was also adjudged Coach of the Year.
The victory vaulted the Red Lions into a tie with the CSB Blazers as the second most winningest team in NCAA behind Letran Knights, who have collared five taekwondo titles overall.
After topping last year’s hostilities, the Blazers did not even pose a serious challenge this time, accumulating 287.33 points for only fourth place.
San Beda’s Mendiola neighbor San Sebastian College became the Red Lions’ closest rival as the Stags compiled a second-best 311.58 points. The Letran Knights finished third with 288.16 points.
The Blazers’ junior counterparts made up for their seniors’ sorry performance by romping off with their second straight crown.
The CSB-La Salle Greenhills Junior Blazers collected an aggregate of 429.91 points to destroy the opposition in the high school play.
A very far second were the San Sebastian Staglets with only 179.16 points.
Meanwhile, Letran consoled itself by topping the women’s competition, which was held as a demonstration sport for the second straight year. The school’s lady jins logged a winning total of 407.41 points. - GMANews.TV
