The Guidance Office is a special service arm of the Basic Education Department and it exists primarily to assist the administration, faculty, and parents in discovering, understanding and accepting the uniqueness of each student; helping him/her to grow as a mature individual, with the purpose of instilling in him/her the Benedictine value of love for prayer, work, and study.
The main thrust of guidance is to help the students develop and grow into effective and responsive learners, eventually resulting in the prevention of common learning disabilities and developmental blocks caused by a lack of immediate intervention.
COUNSELING is the heart of the guidance services. The office implements the counseling service as its share in the Benedictine task of helping students adjust to the dynamic aspects of life affecting their growth and development (social, physical, emotional, psychological, mental and spiritual). This is directed towards awakening the students’ realization and acceptance of their limitations, the discovery of their capabilities and to encourage them to set direction for future change and improvement of their lives.
Individual Counseling. Thisisgiven to clients that need in-depth analysis and immediate attention such as walk-ins, referrals and follow- ups. We also see to it that each student is called-in for routine or contact interview to establish closer counselor-counselee bonding and to check key areas of concern.
Group Counseling . This is regularly done through the guidance class which is called GROWTH in CHRISTIAN PERSONHOOD or simply GICP. This is designed to deepen the personal formation of the students. The GICP classes take care primarily of the emotional-psychological development of each student. The program is developmental and formational taking into account the age characteristics of each level.
TESTING. The testing program aids the administration and faculty in strengthening its curriculum. The assessment of students’ performance enables the office to recommend the necessary course of action to be taken and to maximize the learning of students or the needed adjustment in the approach of the instructional area to make learning more attainable.
INFORMATION . This primarily provides updated and pertinent data, which may be useful in designing programs to answer the developmental needs of the students. It is meant to gather and relay relevant facts needed by the members of the community, for their education, personal, social, and spiritual advancement.
Career Education Program. The main objective of this is to help the students realize that understanding one’s strengths, values and preferences is the foundation for education and occupational choices. Since we are a college preparatory school, Career Education Program plays a vital role in guiding the students to make the best career choice that they will pursue in college.
INVENTORY. This service ventures into the continuous process of collecting and updating comprehensive information about each student’s family background, academic standing, home and school behavior, personal interest and personality observation reports. This service enables the office to furnish the needed data whenever the administrators, teachers, and parents seek assistance.
RESEARCH AND EVALUATION. The office is able to evaluate its own programs and services to continuously improve its standard. Moreover, it also provides assistance to the department in measuring the programs and activities it offers.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES. The special programs of the office include activities that supplement the academic and non-academic programs. These are services translated into programs where the office assists the Administration and Support offices towards the implementation and realization of the educational goals of the school. Programs prepared are tailor-made to answer the needs of the Bedan students.
INTERVENTION SERVICES. These are meant to address the needs of the students especially those who have been identified as ‘in need of professional help.’ We have several programs lined up. Such as:
(1) Program for Shepherding Parents and Children
(2) Play Therapy Program – this is designed specifically for the lower levels to provide a bridge that will link the counselor and the counselee towards gaining insight and awareness into a child’s world or interior landscape through their primary means of communication - play. A child can be assisted through “playing out” the problem until the feelings are diminished and conflict is resolved.
(3) Program for students with ‘special needs.’ – this is our answer to cases where the help of professionals who are experts on the field are sought. For evaluation and diagnosis, we provide the parents a directory of developmental pediatricians or clinical psychologists to choose from. Upon diagnosis, the school assists the parents in the intervention program that is specifically designed for the student.
