The National Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball tournament occurs every first semester of the academic year. It is divided into two divisions: (juniors) for high school students, and college students with two (2) categories for male (seniors) and female (women) college student athletes.
This 85th season, University of Perpetual Help System Dalata is the host school for the volleyball sport event. EAC gymnasium will be the new venue for the volleyball games. Opening ceremonies was commenced last August 16, 2009 (Sunday) at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, 8am.
St. Benilde and the Letran High open its title defense as the chess competition of the 85th NCAA season unfurls today at the Cyberzone area of the SM Manila.
Management Committee member Ding Lozano of Mapua, who is in charge of chess this season, said all but Angeles U Foundation is fielding a team in both the senior and junior divisions.
?It?s going to be more exciting this year because we have a bigger field,? said Lozano, last year?s Management Committee chair.
Lozano said tournament chief arbiter National Master Elias Lao would do the drawing of lots and pairiongs before the start of the tournament scheduled at 12 noon.
Lozano said several games would be played every week that is expected to conclude in October.
All eyes are on the Blazers in the college section and the Squires in the high school division as they shoot to reign supreme in discipline they dominated last season.
Expected to challenge St. Benilde for the crown is last year?s runner-up Mapua while San Sebastian High has high hopes in unseating the Muralla-based wood pushers this year.
San Beda, coached by seasoned mentor Henrisky Mariano, is also expected to seriously contend for the crown along with San Sebastian, Perpetual Help, Letran and guest teams Arellano U and Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Chess is the second event next to basketball that was played in this semester
