The Benedictine Monks of the
Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat, Manila

St. Benedict wrote a rule for monasteries where he advised that monks should live under a Rule and an Abbot.

The Holy Rule for Monasteries is based on Scripture and the monastic experience of St. Benedict. His Rule reflects his spiritual wisdom and skill in dealing with human behavior.

The Abbot is the superior of the monastery and takes the place of Christ in the midst of the brothers. A monk is called to trust this human representative with his life as he submits to him as his spiritual guide and leader.

A LIFE OF PRAYER

In the monastery, the monks come together to pray several times in order to sanctify the hours of the day. There are also times for silence and quiet meditation, work and study.

The monk lives a life dedicated to God. He takes the vows of Obedience, Conversion of Life (which embraces poverty and chastity) and Stability. By the vow of Obedience he renounces his will and submits himself wholly to his superior; by the vow of Conversion he puts himself under the obligation to strive to give himself totally to God by faithfulness to the monastic way of life; renouncing all sin, as well as the right to private property and marriage. By the vow of Stability, he attaches himself for life to one particular monastery. Through the vows he renounces not only attachment to the world, but also the love of self. He lives no longer for himself, entirely for God.

Silence, sacred reading, and study allow the monk to live his life in faith, and to consider it as a response to God’s call.

COMMUNITY

The monk lives his life with his community. He prays with his community, and shares in its work and apostolate.

Today, the Benedictines of Manila administer three schools: San Beda College, San Beda College- Alabang and San Beda College -Rizal.

The monks work in these schools as administrators, teachers and retreat masters.

"Listen carefully, my son, to the Master’s instruction, and attend to them with the ear of your heart. This is the advice from a father who loves you; welcome it, and faithfully put it into practice…This message of mine is for you, then, if you are ready to give up your own will, once and for all, and armed with the strong and noble weapons of obedience to do battle for the true King, Christ the Lord."
